(CNN) -- Taiwan's Premier Jiang Yi-huah announced his resignation Saturday after his political party lost an election, the Taiwanese government said.
Saturday's election was the first since protesters -- from what Taiwanese media dubbed the "Sunflower Movement" -- hit the streets to rail against a controversial trade deal between Taiwan and mainland China, its longtime adversary.
According to Taiwan's Central Election Commission, Jiang Yi-huah's ruling Kuomintang placed second in Saturday's voting with just over 40% backing. The top vote-getter was the Democratic Progressive Party, with more than 47% of the vote.
