Lille (CNN) -- Roger Federer's Switzerland won a first Davis Cup title on Sunday when the 17-time grand slam champion defeated France's Richard Gasquet 6-4 6-2 6-2.
The victory in front of a record tennis crowd of 27,448 for a pro match gave Switzerland an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five match series in Lille, northern France.
The 33-year-old Federer has now won almost everything in his career, just missing an Olympic singles gold.
But Federer wasn't a one-man show this weekend. Stan Wawrinka earned Switzerland's first point Friday and shone in Saturday's doubles victory alongside Federer.
Disappointment for the French men in tennis continued. France, a country that loves its tennis, last won a Davis Cup title 13 years ago, and the last French man to win a major was Yannick Noah in 1983.
